MUZAFFARABAD: Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif on Friday called upon the United Nations to fulfil its obligation to resolve the Jammu and Kashmir dispute in accordance with its own resolutions, and said he would emphatically highlight the Kashmir issue during the upcoming session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York.
The premier gave this assurance to the leaders of the All Parties Hurriyat Conference (APHC) belonging to Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) chapter, in a meeting held in the AJK capital.
AJK’s President Sardar Masood Khan and Prime Minister Raja Farooq Haider were also present.
Nawaz held the meeting with Hurriyat leaders to take them on board before proceeding to New York where he is due to address world leaders at the 71st UNGA session. “Pakistan will continue to extend moral, diplomatic and political support to Kashmiris,” he said.
He said that Indian forces’ atrocities in Held Kashmir had touched extremes. “Oppression is destined to end, and truth will prevail,” he said in reference to the ongoing brutalities against Kashmiris.
He said the Kashmiris’ demand for the right to self-determination was just, which had also been acknowledged by the international community.
“The movement of Kashmiris will ultimately succeed as… such movements could not be suppressed with oppression.”
He said Pakistan would raise its voice for the resolution of Kashmir dispute at all fora.
The premier said that he had always conveyed the true feelings and emotions of the Kashmiri people in his speeches and discussions held with world leaders on various occasions.
“I would once again highlight the Kashmir issue in my address at the United Nations General Assembly’s session and also in the bilateral meetings with world leaders during the upcoming visit,” he added.
He further said that Indian forces had inflicted unprecedented atrocities against the innocent people of IHK who are struggling for their just right to self-determination.
“This right to self-determination was given to the people of IHK by the United Nations itself, which has unfortunately failed, so far, to implement its own resolution,” he said, adding, “Pakistan is rightly supporting this just and indigenous struggle for the freedom of Indian-held Kashmir.”
Nawaz said that Pakistan’s unwavering diplomatic, moral and political support reflected the “commitment we made with our brothers and sisters” living in IHK.
“This commitment is strengthening with each passing day, and the day is not far away when the struggle of Kashmiri people will culminate in the freedom of IHK,” he added.
The premier said the world must take stock of the increasing atrocities against innocent people in Held Kashmir, adding that hundreds of people had been blinded and thousands injured by the use of pellet guns in the last few months alone.
